Melbourne beauty among top five in world Up one place

Melbourne beauty Abbey Lee Kershaw has been named one of the world's top five models.

Kershaw, who is in Australia for the David Jones Spring Collection show in Sydney tomorrow, has clocked in at fifth spot on Models.com's authoritative list of power mannequins.

It is a rise of one place for Kershaw.

Kershaw, who is rarely available to appear in runway shows in Australia owing to the huge demand for her services in Europe, America and Asia, is the top-ranked Aussie.

Fellow DJ's girls Catherine McNeil has been listed at No. 12, while newlywed - and allegedly expectant mum - Miranda Kerr is at No. 15.

Kershaw, whose father is former Richmond and Hawthorn footballer Kim Kershaw, is the darling of the international fashion scene after securing gigs as the face of Chanel and ck for Calvin Klein, as well as appearing in the latest Fendi fragrance campaign.

The 23-year-old has represented Gucci and was the face of Gucci's Flora perfume.

She dates rocker Matthew Hutchinson, who plays in little-known band Our Mountain.

Dutch model Lara Stone topped the rankings, from Freja Beha Erichsen, who is rumoured to be dating McNeil, and Natasha Poly, who were placed equal second.

There are many possibilities for such a dramatic radical change, maintains James Monahan, a clinical psychologist and associate professor of criminal justice at the University of New Haven.
"Maybe he was the runt of the litter; the child who couldn't meet his parents' expectations," said Monahan.

 His father, Bahar ul-Haq, is a retired Pakistani Air Force official. He was able to provide an upper middle-class lifestyle for his family, sending his boys to school in the U.S.
Nothing in Shahzad's early years captured the attention of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
In 1998, they granted Shahzad a student visa which allowed him to attend Southeastern University in Washington, D.C., which lost its accreditation last year. In 2000, he transferred to the University of Bridgeport where he studied computer science and engineering.

On May 13, 2001, ul-Haq sat with his wife in the second row of folding chairs at UB's 91st commencement. His parents spoke to a Connecticut Post reporter about traveling to Germany the next week to see another son graduate. As Shahzad passed through the receiving line for his bachelor of arts diploma in computer science, his father excitedly told the reporter, "that's him."
Still Shahzad caught no one's attention at UB.William Greenspan, who served as Shahzad's academic adviser at the school, remembers him "as rather unremarkable ... he didn't do anything to stand out."Greenspan never noticed Shahzad standing among or conversing with the other students who regularly congregate in Mandeville Hall.
"He would come once a term to register for classes and then go on his way," the professor said. "Always very polite but a very forgettable character until today."

In April 2002, ICE granted another three-year visa to Shahzad allowing him to begin graduate studies at UB as well as work in the area.Still professors noticed no change in Shahzad's personality or academics."He didn't impress me as being overly good or overly bad," said Ward Thrasher, UB's assistant dean at the school of business where he is the director of the MBA program. "He didn't stand out one way or the other."

Faisal Shahzad was never one to draw attention to himself.

An average student in college, an average employee in the workplace, an average neighbor in suburbia.Shahzad parlayed this into jobs crunching data for corporate America’s elite like Elizabeth Arden, which enabled him to buy a single-family home for his wife and children in suburban Shelton.
But quicker than the rise came the fall. Last June, Shahzad stopped making payments on his $218,400 mortgage, quit his job at Affinion Group in Norwalk and moved his family back to Pakistan.

“They were able to basically get one phone number and by running it through a number of databases, figure out who they thought the guy was,” the official said.A huge law-enforcement force tracked the suspect through the afternoon and evening. He was arrested at 11:30 p.m. at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.
Faisal ShahzadThe vehicle identification number had been removed from the bomb-laden 1993 Nissan Pathfinder left in Times Square. But investigators were able to lift it from a second location on the vehicle, and used that to track down a Connecticut man who said he had sold the Pathfinder for cash about three weeks ago.
The man had offered the vehicle on Craigslist, and FBI agents were able to recover the number from a disposable cellphone that had been used by the buyer.The suspect didn’t still have the phone. But using a lot of technology and access to database, agents located the suspect.Here’s more on Shahzad, how he became a citizen and what that means:If Shahzad did try to blow up that SUV in Times Square, he’ll represent what many Americans fear: a foreign born naturalized citizen turned against us within our own shores. Basically, somebody who would be nearly impossible to stop from carrying out something truly horrific since he’s “one of us.”Still, I would argue that this seems no different than a lone nut getting angry and flying his plane into a building…except this attempt wasn’t successful. Improvement of Fashion design

Read and remember.....................The first designer who was not merely a dressmaker was Charles Frederick Worth (1826–1895). Before the former draper set up his maison couture fashion house in Paris, clothing design and creation was handled by largely anonymous people, and high fashion descended from style worn at royal courts. Worth's success was such that he was able to dictate to his customers what they should wear, instead of following their lead as earlier dressmakers had done. The term couturier was in fact first created in order to describe him.

It was during this period that many design houses began to hire artists to sketch or paint designs for garments. The images alone could be presented to clients much more cheaply than by producing an actual sample garment in the workroom. If the client liked the design, they ordered it and the resulting garment made money for the house. Thus, the tradition of designers sketching out garment designs instead of presenting completed garments on models to customers began as an economy................................




2000s-------In the '00s, as the future began to seem increasingly bleak, fashion, and indeed the Arts in general, looked to the past for inspiration, arguably more so than in previous decades. Vintage clothing, especially from the Sixties, Seventies, and Eighties (the eighties idea of clashing, electric colours becoming especially popular in mid-late 2007) became extremely popular and fashion designers often sought to emulate bygone styles in their collections. The early '00s saw a continuation of the minimalist look of the Nineties in high fashion. Later on, designers began to adopt a more colorful, feminine, excessive, and 'anti-modern' look. Name brands became of particular importance among young people and many celebrities launched their own lines of clothing. Tighter fit clothing and longer hair became mainstream for many men and women. Rap music also had a considerable influence on popular fashion, in the early part of the 2000s.

For many of the own-label designers who emerged in the early years of the twenty-first century, financial factors became increasingly critical. Many new young talents found they now depended on investors (to whom, in extreme cases, they would even surrender their names) and were always burdened by the risk that their partners, motivated by market realism and the desire for quick returns, would severely restrict their autonomy.

The mid 2000s celebrated the return of a more feminine look. This began with the comeback of the dress. The figure-hugging look was disbanded in the summer of 2007, when designers began to experiment with flowy, tunic shapes. Bright, block colour also became a focus. Menswear has become increasingly important as well and has too gone in a slightly feminine direction, especially apparent after the middle of the decade.
